Probe into Hailakandi polio death

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Silchar, Dec. 22: Hailakandi district administration today ordered a probe into the death of a two-and-a-half month-old girl who died after she was administered polio drops during an immunisation drive in Lala block yesterday..
District magistrate Tapan Chandra Goswami has ordered a joint investigation by the district administration and health department into the causes leading to the death of the infant, identified as Nazma Begum Barbhuyan, of Bhabhanipur village near Lala town.
Reports from Hailakandi said the baby had a running stomach and a few bouts of vomiting after she was administered the polio vaccine.
Debashis Chakravarty, the additional district magistrate, and Uday Das, the additional joint director of health services, will conduct the probe.
However, district health officials doubt whether the polio vaccine caused the death of the infant, as it was quite natural for a child to develop symptoms of bowel disorder, including occasional throwing up of food, after immunisation.
But what has caused concern is that six more children aged between one day and five years in the adjacent village of Chandrapur took ill after the immunisation drive.
A total of 12,000 children were administered the polio vaccine in Lala block alone.
