Bal Thackeray spews venom, blames people for pushing state into 'hell'
Mumbai: Stunned by his party's third consecutive defeat at the hustings, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Friday blamed the people of Maharashtra for "pushing the state back into hell" by re-electing the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) combine.
In an editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna, which expressed the party's shock and anguish over its rout in the 2009 assembly polls, the Sena chief and the newspaper's editor wondered what were the great achievements of the Democratic Front government in the past 10 years that made people to vote for it.
"There was corruption, load-shedding, Maoist terror which killed policemen, suicides of thousands of farmers, Mumbai terror attacks, etc," Thackeray noted in the editorial.
The results of the assembly elections held Oct 13 gave the Congress 82 seats and the NCP 62 -- totalling 144 in the 288-member assembly. The opposition alliance got a drubbing with only 90 seats, the Shiv Sena getting 44 and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 46. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) got 13 seats.
Thackeray blamed the people for the defeat of the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saffron alliance and for bringing back a "naalayak" (useless) government.

He sleeps for "four to five hours" a day, burns the midnight oil to blog and has a packed shooting schedule. But 67-year-old megastar Amitabh Bachchan insists he is neither the busiest person in the Hindi film industry nor an important part of any of his projects.
"I don't think that is entirely correct. I just do whatever is offered to me. I do films, I am now doing television ('Big Boss 3')," said Amitabh shrugging off the busy bee title.
"If you plan your day and time, you can find time to do all these things. If the body responds, it's fine. But sooner or later it's going to pack up, so might as well work while it's working," said Amitabh who squeezed in enough time to reply to 1207 SMSes that he received on his birthday last week.
Over four decades of excellent cinematic presence has made him a brand. Doesn't that overshadow others in a film?
"I don't think that is entirely correct. May be in the early years, they (audiences) came to watch my films because I was in it. But now I am just one of the credit titles. I am not that important," Bachchan told us in an interview.
"I am a part of the crew and the cast. Even in my early years, I used to think that. I think the product itself is more important. It's the film that is going to make you or your name or give you visibility. If that goes wrong then everything goes wrong. So one must work as a team so that the product works," he explained.
The actor stays awake till the wee hours to write his blog.
"That is like a compulsion. I feel very vacant and I feel as though I haven't done justice to my day if I don't write the blog because there are now a few hundred people who are regular. They wait to know about me and they want to talk to me," Amitabh said.
"I feel somewhat guilty if I don't write the blog every day. So even if I am late, I make sure that I put something down," he added.
Doesn't his family object to his blogging addiction? "They are always saying, 'Please don't write your blog. Get off your blog'," he said.
"You have all kinds of funny things happening to your neck and shoulder because you're all the time bending down on your laptop. But that's okay," added the Big B, as he is fondly called.
Strenuous working hours and regular blogging hardly leaves any time to catch up on sleep but the actor is content with what he gets.
"I get about four to five hours' sleep and that's okay," said the veteran, who was seen this year only in a cameo in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Delhi-6'.
Amitabh was here to promote his upcoming film 'Aladin'. Releasing Oct 30, it is a contemporary take on the classic fairy tale and he stars in it as the Genie.
Produced by Sunil Lulla and Sujoy Ghosh, the film has been directed by Ghosh. It also stars Riteish Deshmukh in the lead opposite debutante Jacqueline Fernandez. Sanjay Dutt appears in a negative role in the film.
Apart from casting magic in the film as the Genie, the sexagenarian has also performed action sequences in 'Aladin'. He says the only way to attempt stunts at his age is by keeping "fit".
"You have to keep fit. Some of the action scenes are really tough and they are physically very draining. But now they have wonderful gadgetry which can make you jump sky high and do all kinds of things. We use that, but even doing that is strenuous. If you are not prepared to do all that, then it doesn't work," he said.
Despite wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya all being actors, the Hindi film industry still has not seen the entire family together in a film.
When asked about it, he said: "I don't know. Somebody will have to design a project like that. If they do, we'll be very happy to do it."
Apart from 'Aladin', Amitabh's other projects include 'Paa', 'Teen Patti', 'Rann' and 'Johnny Mastana'.

MNS,the party, which made a deep dent in the Shiv Sena vote bank, was leading in 14 other seats in the 288-member House.
MNS candidate Mangesh Sangale won from Vikhroli in suburban Mumbai, defeating NCP rival Pallavi Patil, wife of NCP MP Sanjay Patil, who was elected from Mumbai North-East.
Former cricketer Vinod Kambli was also contesting from Vikhroli from Lok Bharati party. Another MNS candidate Ramesh Wanjale from Khadakwasla constituency in Pune district defeated BJP's Murlidhar Mohol and Vikas Dangat of Congress.
MNS was formed three years ago by Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's estranged nephew. Out of the results declared so far, 32 have gone to the ruling Cong-NCP alliance and 17 to main opposition BJP-Shiv Sena combine.

Claiming that the strong showing by his three-year-old party in the Assembly polls showed that the Marathi cause was for real, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray said on Thursday that his MLAs would "control" the government in the legislature while he would continue to take to the streets for the sons-of-the-soil.
Thackeray was speaking hours after his party won 13 seats and made a strong debut in the Assembly, surpassing even its own internal estimates that gave the party around eight seats of the 143 it contested. Eleven of those 13 victories came from the Mumbai, Kalyan and Nashik regions, industrial belts with high migrant population and where the MNS's identity politics have found strong favour with local Marathi youth. The party won one seat each in Pune and Aurangabad.
Thackeray said the people had reposed faith in him for taking up the Marathi cause and his MLAs would live up to it in the Assembly. "The Opposition failed for the last 10 years in the Assembly to play their role effectively. Now my 13 MLAs will show how the government has to be controlled by the Opposition in our own style. The results show that the Marathi cause is for real and there is support for us for taking up the issue," he said. "My MLAs will raise these issues in the Assembly and I will be there on the streets."
Asked about the personal campaign the Sena and the BJP ran against him, accusing him of covertly supporting the ruling Congress and NCP, Thackeray said it was time the Sena introspected as voters had shown who they favoured more. The good showing by the MNS would ensure it is recognised by the Election Commission as a regional party and also allotted the railway engine as its permanent symbol, MNS leaders said.
The MNS victories once again came as a surprise in many constituencies and upset popular predictions that had favoured strong Sena or BJP candidates. For instance, MNS general secretary Nitin Sardesai was the dark horse in the prestigious Mahim seat in Mumbai city where Marathi TV star Aadesh Bandekar was pitted against Sena-rebel Sada Sarvankar who joined the Congress after being denied the ticket. Maharashtra's ruling Congress-NCP alliance is set to form its third successive government in the state as it has emerged as the largest political formation in the assembly elections held on October 13.
The Congress-NCP combine is forging ahead and has managed simple majority on its own. They have until now won 144 seats and are leading in one. The Shiv Sena-BJP on the other hand has taken a severe beating and the combined numbers of the seats won just 91 seats, 25 seats short of its tally from 2004.
Affected vastly by the presence of Raj Thackeray-led MNS, the Shiv Sena-BJP combine has managed to bag only 91 seats and leading in one, far behind its 2004 tally of 116 seats. Shiv Sena has won 45 seats, while BJP has bagged 46 seats and was leading in 1 seat.
Raj Thackeray's MNS has emerged as the surprise package with victories in 13 seats, way beyond the 8-10 seats even party insiders had forecast. The assembly has 288 seats and the halfway mark for a simple majority is 145.
In fact, the MNS opened its account with the victory of two of its nominees: from Vikhroli, Mangesh Sangle defeated NCP's Pallavi Sanjay Patil, wife of Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Patil and Shiv Sena's Datta Dalvi; also, MNS nominee Ramesh Wanjale got elected from Khadakvasla.
The other winners are Chief Minister Ashok Chavan (Bhokar), Narayan Rane (Kudal), NCP minister Ajit Pawar (Baramati), Sushilkumar Shinde's daughter Praniti (Solapur city central), NCP nominee from Kalwan, A T Pawar, Shivendraje Bhosale from Satara and while President Pratibha Patil's son Rajendra Shekhawat defeated Congress rebel Sunil Deshmukh in Amravati.
In Malegaoan Central, Jana Surajya Shakti candidate and cleric of Jama Masjid Mufti Mohammed Ismail got elected. He defeated sitting Congress MLA Shaikh Rashid and JD(S) strongman and former MLA Nihal Ahmed. In Kalwan, NCP leader A T Pawar got elected for the eighth time in a row. He trounced CPM strongman Jiva Pandu Gavit. Gavit's constituency Surgana had been merged with Kalwan after delimitation, requiring him to shift his base.
With the Maharashtra poll verdict indicating a lead for Congress-NCP combine, BJP-Shiv Sena on Thursday conceded defeat and blamed the Raj Thackeray-led MNS for cutting their votes resulting in their poor-showing.
"We accept defeat...We lost in Mumbai, we lost miserably in western Maharashtra and we could not achieve our aim," BJP Vice President BJP Gopinath Munde said.
"MNS appears set to win about 13 seats after garnering around 5-6 per cent votes. After all, these were our votes," he said.
Expressing disappointment over the poll verdict, Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi said, "we never expected these results...if it is a defeat, it has to be accepted by everybody."
Refuting suggestions of fighting between him and BJP Maharashtra chief Nitin Gadkari, Munde said, "we campaigned unitedly. There is no question of fighting between us. The MNS is the only one reason."
There have been reports of differences between Munde and Gadkari on various issues concerning the functioning of the state party unit. Munde rubbished suggestions that infighting in the BJP's state unit or at the centre had cost it dearly in Maharashtra.
"This talk about differences are wrong. It is only in public perception," Munde's whose relations with state BJP chief Nitin Gadkari has been under severe strain, said.

Week 1
- Day 5: Bhakhtyar and Vindu's fight almost came to blows over spilled milk in the Gym area. Vindu took offense when Bhakhtyar asked him to clean the spillage, assuming that Vindu created the mess.
- KRK shouted at Poonam, kamal felt she was referring to him when she said 'some' people are shameless and turn up at the table to eat without helping in the kitchen.
Week 2
- KRK went on a hunger strike and claimed he would not eat or drink until Claudia says "I Love You" to him. After a day Big Boss set off the alarm in the middle of night when kamal was trying to have food secretly.
- KRK and Bhakhtyar were sent to jail, as they were found without their mikes for several hours.
Week 3
- Day 18: kamal Khan hit Rohit Verma with a bottle and went on to fight with Raju Srivastav for supporting Rohit. KRK used highly offensive language, swearing at Raju and Rohit. kamal Khan was ejected from the house after all the fellow contestants started revolting against him for physical fights.
Rohit was chatting with Shamita when he said he wasted some points last day for some unworthy performances(ref - Day 16:Tasks), and that he assumed he donated those points for charity and will get over it. KRK took offense and threw a bottle at Rohit. Raju opined that KRK should have talked to him if felt bad about the remark, hitting Rohit wasn't called for. Big boss called KRK to the confession room and advised him to calm down. The housemates were not happy about no action being taken on kamal. They planned to leave the house if no action was taken against him. kamal was subsequently ejected from the house for such violent behaviour. With the eviction of KRK, a lot of the spice and controversy factor in the Bogg Boss House has been reduced. KRK was known for sewing trouble from the inception and had had several face offs with the inmates from the first week itself.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (Marathi: ?????????? ????????? ????, English translation: Maharashtra Renaissance Army) is a far-right regional political party operating in Maharashtra, India. It was founded on the March 9, 2006 in Mumbai after splitting of the parent party Shiv Sena. Its president and founder is Raj Thackeray.

The party was founded by Raj Thackeray, nephew of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. Raj Thackeray resigned from his uncle's party in January 2006 and announced his intention to start a new political party. The reason given by him for breaking away from the Shiv Sena was that the latter was "run by petty clerks" because of which it had "fallen from its former glory". Also Mr. Thackeray had a clear motive of building a political awareness for the development related issues of the state and giving them a center stage in national politics. The agenda is getting an immense support and sympathies of the state youth.
At the time of the party's foundation, Raj Thackeray stated that he does not want to have hostilities with his uncle who "was, is and always will be (his) mentor".
Although the MNS is a break-away group from the Shiv Sena, the party is still based on Hindutva and Bhumiputra ideologies. When unveiling the party in an assembly at Shivaji Park he said, that everyone is anxious to see what will happen to Hindutva.[2] When unveiling, he also said, "I shall elaborate on the party's stance on issues like Hindutva, its agenda for development of Maharashtra and the significance of the party flag colours at the March 19 public meeting."[3]
Raj Thackeray considers himself an Indian nationalist (not just a regionalist) and claims that the Congress is two-faced.[4]

[edit] 2008 violence against North Indians in Maharashtra
In February 2008, some MNS activists clashed with Samajwadi Party (SP) party workers in Mumbai when Samajwadi Party supporters attended a rally at Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai, a stronghold of MNS, where Samajwadi Party leader, Abu Asim Azmi made a fiery speech. After the clashes, 73 MNS activists and 19 SP workers were arrested by Mumbai Police for indulging in violence.[5]
On February 6, 2008, reportedly, about 200 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party workers quit the party and joined Shiv Sena to protest against MNS's so-called anti-North Indian agenda.[6]
A petition was filed in the Patna civil court on February 8 against Thackeray for his alleged remarks over Chhath, Bihar's most popular festival.[7] Mr. Thackeray maintains he is not against Chhath Puja[8], but against the "show of arrogance" displayed by some people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on this occasion.
On February 10, 2008, MNS workers attacked vendors and shopkeepers from North India in various parts of Maharashtra, and destroyed government property to vent their anger against the reported move to arrest Raj Thackeray.[9] Nashik police detained 26 MNS workers for the violence.
In February 2008, Raj Thackarey's speech on the issue of uncontrolled migration into Mumbai from other parts of India created a well publicized controversy. Maharashtra's economy leads other states in India and its capital Mumbai has become a magnet to migrant population from states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. MNS supporters clashed with activists of the Samajwadi Party, a regional party from Uttar Pradesh leading to street violence. Thackeray also criticized noted film actor turned politician Amitabh Bachchan, a native of Uttar Pradesh, for taking sides in the migrant issue. Bachchan came into fame and fortune in Mumbai's film industry – Bollywood. [10][11]
On September 8, 2008, Infosys Technologies announced that 3,000 employee positions had been shifted from Pune due to construction delays caused earlier that year by MNS attacks on North Indian construction workers in Maharashtra.[12]
On 15 October 2008, Thackeray threatened to shut down Jet Airways operations in Maharashtra if they did not rehire probationary employees that had been shed in a cost cutting move forced by the economic downturn.[13]
In October 2008, MNS activists beat up North Indian candidates appearing for the all-India Railway Recruitment Board entrance exam for the Western region in Mumbai.[14] One Bihari died in the ensuing rioting.[15] In retaliation for the MNS' attack on Biharis and North Indians in general, the Bharatiya Bhojpuri Sangh attacked the residence of a Marathi official of Tata Motors in Jamshedpur.[16] Following the uproar in the Indian parliament, and calls that there was no pressure to arrest the MNS chief,[17] Raj Thackeray was arrested in the early hours of October 21. He was produced before a court on the day itself and would return the next day after spending the night in jail.[18] Following the arrest, however, MNS party activists took out their anger on parts of Mumbai city and the region at large.[19] The arrest resulted in applause, fear and calls for a ban on the MNS.[20][21][22] The Shiv Sena, however, maintained a cool response, although senior party leader Manohar Joshi said they were close to supporting the MNS in their agitation against the non-Marathi candidates for the railway board exam.[23]
[edit] Clash with Shiv Sena
On October 10, 2006 clashes erupted between supporters of Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena headed by Raj Thackery. It was alleged that workers of MNS had tore the posters bearing the photographs of Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackrey near the SIES college in Mumbai. Later as retaliation it was alleged that Shiv Sena workers brought down the hoardings with Raj Thackrey's photo near the Sena Bhavan at Dadar. As the news spread about the incident groups gathered near the Sena Bhavan and started pelting stones at each other. In this incident a policeman was injured and many supporters of both parties were injured. To restore normalcy in the situation the police fired tear gas shells at the mob. Normalcy was eventually restored following police action and the appearance of Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray on the spot. Uddhav appealed to Sena workers to go back home.[24] He said:
"The police will take necessary action. This is happening because many people are joining us from MNS. The defections have started and that is why they are resorting to such actions".[24]
The division chief of the Shiv Sena Milind Vaidya said that they had lodged a complaint with the local police against an MNS worker who was involved in the incident. MNS general secretary Pravin Darekar, however, pinned the cause down to local elections in the SIES college. He alleges that the Sena is concerned about losing their hold over the colleges and that is why they are trying to color the issue, adding that the Sena's allegations had no merit. Raj Thackeray asserts that MNS could not have vandalized the pictures, seeing as how he and his members revere Bal Thackeray.[25]
When a panel is examining a breach of privilege notice from some MP's for remarks made by the Bal Thackeray against Uttar Bharatiyas, MNS chief Raj Thackeray had said he would not allow any politician from UP and Bihar to enter Mumbai if the parliamentary panel insisted on summoning Bal Thackeray. Bal countered this by terming his nephew Raj a "backstabber" and reacted to the MNS chief with a "big no thank you."[26]
Shiv Sena (SS) and MNS workers also clashed at Anand Nagar in Oshiwara over the issuance of Navratri posters during the holiday season. SS corporator Rajul Patel said "The MNS activists had put up huge hoardings and were demanding money from people to remove them. People complained to us and we objected. This led to a scuffle." MNS Vibhag Pramukh (Division Leader) Manish Dhuri retorted that "the Sainiks are jealous of our popularity. On Sunday afternoon, a mob of Shiv Sainiks came to the area and started pulling down posters that were put up by us. We objected to this. Unfortunately, one MNS activist sustained severe injuries."[27]
[edit] Growth in potency
In October 2008, Jet Airways laid off almost 1,000 employees. In the frenzy for reinstatement that followed numerous political parties took the stand for the probationers' cause. First the MNS and the SS came in, then the established national parties, the Congress and the BJP. Even the CPI M, rallied in support of the laid off calcutta employees.
One day after the lay off, the retrenched former staff flocked to the MNS office, even though the SS labour arm, the Bharatiya Kamgar Sena generally rules the aviation unions. The MNS then led more than 300 former employees to Jet's office in Marol. MNS general secretary Nitin Sardesai said, "We met Jet officials today while a lot of (cabin) crew and MNS workers were protesting outside. While we were talking, Jet chairman Naresh Goyal telephoned Raj Thackeray…. He requested us to end the protest and offered to meet Rajsaheb in a couple of days. We had a one-point agenda that those laid off should be taken back."
In two days the MNS march and support got the staff re-hired. The media widely appeared to pronounce Raj as having won the game of one upmanship with the SS, whose mantle of aggressive street politics was seen as havving been usurped. This was a big boost for the MNS' newly formed trade union, the Maharashtra Navnirman Kamgar Sena, which has been trying to cut into the SS' influence in the aviation, hotel and entertainment sectors.[28] The MNS General Secretary Sardesai said "Jet has been forced to take this decision due to the agitation launched by MNS. This is a victory of party chief Raj Thackeray's tactics."[29]

Following an attack on North Indians who had turned up to the RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) railway exam in Mumbai numerous politicians, mainly from the ruling UPA central government, harshly criticised Raj Thackeray and the MNS.
Three UPA ministers demanded tough action, including a call for a ban against the party. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav demanded a ban on the MNS and its chief was a "mental case," Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan added that he would raise the issue in the next cabinet meeting and wondered why no action was being, or had been, taken against the MNS despite a repetition of such violent incidents. He said: "I strongly condemn the incident. There should be strong action against that party...MNS should be banned. [The] Thackeray family has become a chronic problem for Maharashtra and Raj Thackeray, in particular, has become a mental case." The Minister for Food Processing Industries, as well as a Congress leader, Subodh Kant Sahay demanded the Congress-NCP coalition government in Maharashtra treat those responsible for the attacks as criminals. He said, "I have spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and asked him on the goondaism that is going on in the state." As far the government's action till date is concerned, it has been soft on them. It should take action as too much has already happened there." They are not workers. They are looters. Organisations like MNS, Bajrang Dal, VHP and RSS should be banned."[31]
On the first working day following the incident uproarous scene were seen in the national parliament. Numerous members of Parliament condemned the attacks. They also indirectly criticised railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav while noting that even in their regions, the maximum recruitments being made were those of people from Bihar and not from the state where the recruitment drives were held, adding come credence to the MNS' drive. Speaking first on the issue, RJD leader Devendra Prasad Yadav demanded that the Centre take action in the state under Article 355. He noted that despite the attacks, the Maharashtra chief minister has maintained a silence on the issue. Adding that such actions threaten the unity and integrity of the country. Other MP's also demanded the invokation of Article 355 in the light of the attacks. Shahnawaz Hussain of the BJP made such demands in asking if people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh needed a permit to travel to other parts of the country. The CPI M's Mohammed Salim said that such incidents threaten the country's integrity and send a wrong signal to the rest of the country. Anant Geete of the Shiv Sena, however, tried to give the other side of the story by noting the 42 lakh educated and unemployed youth in Maharashtra.[32] The CPI (M) strongly condemned the attack, terming them a "blatant" assault on the Constitution and demanded the immediate arrest of party chief Raj Thackeray, adding that any leniency shown to "divisive forces" will have far-reaching consequences. The CPI(M) Politbureau said the attack on the Constitution was a poor showing on the Maharashtra government which is duty bound to protect and take stringent action against the perpetrators of such crimes. "That it has failed to do so and in fact showing leniency to the leader of the outfit shows the utter bankruptcy of the politics of Congress and its coalition partner." The CPI also said such attacks should not be tolerated and Thackeray and his supporters must be "immediately arrested and prosecuted".[33] Maharasthra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said his government is responsible for failure in preventing attacks and ordered a probe into the incident, which will also inquire into why the job advertisements where not given in Marathi newspapers. He said: "What has happened is not good. Such incidents take place because of loopholes in the law. One can't hold only the Home Ministry responsible for it, it is (entire) Government's responsibility. Such incidents are affecting the image of the state and I have instructed the DGP to take stern action." On Raj Thackeray's accusation that job advertisements were not published in local newspapers to keep out Maharashtrian candidates, he said, "An inquiry would also be conducted about why advertisements about the examination were not given in Marathi newspapers and the number of Marathi candidates invited for the exam." He also assured that such incidents of vandalism would not take place in future.[34] In January 2009, artist Pranava Prakash exhibited his painting series "Chal Hat Be Bihari" in Delhi. It showed in pop style the 2008 attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra in the context of xenophobia. [35]

MNS has received support from local Marathi speaking Muslim community of Umarkhadi and Dongri areas of Mumbai.[36] Also many actors from Marathi Cinema, like Nana Patekar, Ashok Saraf, Prashant Damle, Kuldeep Pawar and Mohan Joshi have come out in support of "son of soil" theory put-forth by MNS.[37] Jharkhand Disom Party has let support to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's agitations against North Indians in Maharashtra.[38]

MNS organizes functions to promote Marathi literature.[39] MNS also holds training workshops for youths to work in retail industry under its child organization Navnirman Academy of Retail Industries. The Student wing named as the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena is an upcoming organisation with a large number of college going youth . its the only students wing to have a separate Girls, Cultural and Sports cell. It is headed by Additya Shirodkar, Son of Lawyer Rajan Shirodkar .[40] MNS also organizes blood donation camps.[41]

Balasaheb Keshav Thackeray (Marathi: बाळासाहेब केशव ठाकरे) (born January 23, 1926), popularly known as Balasaheb Thackeray, is the founder and chief of the Shiv Sena, a Hindu nationalist, Marathi ethnocentric and populist party active mainly in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Balasaheb Thackeray was born to Keshav Sitaram Thackeray (also known as Prabodhankar Thackeray Prabodhankar Thackeray because of his articles in his fortnightly magazine named Prabodhan or "Enlightenment") in a lower-middle class family. Keshav Thackeray was a progressive social activist and writer who was against caste biases and played a key role in the Samyukta Maharashtra Chalwal (literally, United Maharashtra Movement) in the 1950s to form the Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra along with Mumbai as its capital.
Balasaheb Thackeray started his career as a cartoonist in the Free Press Journal in Mumbai in the 1950s. His cartoons were also published in the Sunday edition of The Times of India. In 1960, he launched a cartoon weekly Marmik with his brother. He used it to campaign against the growing influence of non-Marathi people in Mumbai targeting Gujaratis and South Indian labor workers. This is start of insecurity feeling outcome.
He formed the Shiv Sena on June 19, 1966 with the intent of fighting for the rights of the natives of the state of Maharashtra (called Maharashtrians).[1] The early objective of the Shiv Sena was to ensure job security for Maharashtrians against immigrants from southern India, Gujaratis and Marwaris.
Politically, the Shiv Sena was anti-Communist, and wrested control of major trade unions in Mumbai from the Communist Party of India and demanded protection money from mainly Gujarati and marwari business leaders. It later allied itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won the 1995 Maharashtra State Assembly elections and came to power. During the tenure of the government from 1995 to 1999, Balasaheb Thackeray was nicknamed "remote control" since he played a major role in government policies and decisions from behind-the-scenes.
Thackeray has claimed that the Shiv Sena has helped the Marathi manoos (the Marathi commoner) in Mumbai,[2] especially in the public sector.[3] Opposition leftist parties allege that the Shiv Sena has done little to solve the problem of unemployment facing a large proportion of Maharashtrian youth during its tenure, in contradiction to its ideological foundation of 'sons of the soil.'[4]

Thackeray is very vocal in his opposition to people who migrate to Mumbai, to non-Hindus (especially Muslims), and to illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh. In the late 1970s, as part of his "Maharashtra is for Maharashtrians" campaign, Thackeray threatened migrants from South India with harm unless they left Mumbai.
In 2002, Thackeray issued a call to form Hindu suicide squads to counter alleged Muslim violence:
If such suicide squads are formed only then can we take on perpetrators of mindless violence.[5]
In reaction to Thackeray's call, Maharashtra government registered a case against him for inciting enmity between different groups.[6]
Asia Times further reported on Thackeray's rhetoric:
"to take the Muslims head on". "Trouble-making Muslims should be wiped out from the country ... kick out the four crore [40 million] Bangladeshi Muslims and then the country will be secure," the Shiv Sena leader said. Urging Hindus to start calling India "Hindu rashtra" (Hindu nation), he maintained that only "our religion [Hinduism] is to be honored here" and then "we will look after other religions".[7]
At least two organizations founded and managed by the retired Indian Army officers namely Lt Col (retired) Jayant Rao Chitale and Lt Ge. P.N. Hoon (former commander-in-chief of the Western Command), answered Bal Thackeray's call to set up the suicide squads in India. Lt Gen. Hoon claimed, Thackeray instructed him to set up the training camps.[8]
Thackeray continues to publish inflammatory editorials in his party's newsletter, Saamana (Confrontation).
[edit] Views on Muslims
Thackeray's views have typically been highly anti-Muslim, usually attacking them and occasionally sympathizing with them. He has declared that he is "not against every Muslim, but only those who reside in this country but do not obey the laws of the land...I consider such people traitors.[1] His party is viewed as being anti-Muslim, though Shiv Sainiks officially reject this accusation. [2] When explaining his views on Hindutva, he has conflated Islam with violence and has called for Hindus to "fight terrorism and fight Islam".[9] In an interview in Suketu Mehta's book 'Maximum City', he advocates the hanging of Indian Muslims and mass expulsion of Muslim migrants from neighboring Bangladesh.
In the 1980s he had stated that:
"They [Muslims] were spreading like a cancer and should be operated on like a cancer. The ... country should be saved from the Muslims and the police should support them [Hindu Maha Sangh] in their struggle just like the police in Punjab were sympathetic to the Khalistanis."[10]
Balasaheb Thackeray criticized and challenged Indian Muslims through his party newspaper, Sāmna, around the time the 16th century Babri Masjid was demolished by members of the Shiv Sena and the BJP in the northern town of Ayodhya, on December 6, 1992. Orthodox Hindus believe that the Babri Mosque was built on the demolished ruins of a Hindu temple in the 16th century, and consider it to be the Ram Janmabhoomi[citation needed] (birthplace of the Hindu God Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, one of the Trimurti of the Hindu Pantheon).
The Justice Srikrishna Commission of Enquiry, which investigated the ensuing communal riots in Mumbai, indicted Thackeray for sparking anti-Muslim violence, which led to more than 1,000 deaths in several ensuing riots, many by having kerosene poured on their bodies while alive and then being burned to death. The death toll during the actual act of the demolition of the Mosque was zero. The Srikrishna Commission found that Thackeray was personally responsible, not only for inciting the mobs through his incendiary speeches, but also directly coordinating the movement of the rioters[citation needed]. At the time, Thackeray made allegations that the Commission was "biased" and "anti-Hindu". His views were not supported outside of the Shiv Sena party.[11]
In a deposition before the Srikrishna Commission a witness alleged Thackeray coordinated much of the January 1993 Mumbai carnage. Yuvraj Mohite claimed, "Balasaheb was sitting and he was getting calls from various places. He would ask what was happening at that particular place (from where he got the call) and then he would say, 'Kill them. Send them to Allah.'" Mohite additionally told the commission that "Thackeray –
- Ordered that not one Muslim be left alive to stand in the witness box
- Asked his men to send the additional police commissioner, A A Khan, to his Allah.
- Ordered his men to retaliate to the Hindu killings in Jogeshwari."
Later, in February 1993 Thackeray said, "I am proud of what my boys have done. We had to retaliate and we did. If it was not for us, no one would have controlled the Muslims."[12]
However, in an interview in 1998, he claims to have tempered his stance on many issues that the Shiv Sena had with Muslims, particularly regarding the Babri Mosque or Ram Janmabhoomi issue,[13] saying:
"We must look after the Muslims and treat them as part of us."[13]
He has since made more inflammatory statements regarding Muslims, and reiterated his desire for Hindus to unite across linguistic barriers and to see "a Hindustan for Hindus" and to "bring Islam to this country down to its knees".[14]
However, he has also expressed admiration for Muslims in Mumbai in the wake of the 11 July 2006 Mumbai train bombings perpetrated by Islamic fundamentalists. In response to threats made by the leader of the Samajwadi Party that accusations of terrorism directed at Indian Muslims would bring about communal strife, Thackeray said that the unity of Mumbaikars (residents of Mumbai) in the wake of the terrorist attacks was "a slap to fanatics of Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi" and that Thackeray "salute(s) those Muslims who participated in the two minutes' silence on July 18 to mourn the blast victims".[15]
In 2008, Thackeray wrote "Islamic terrorism is growing and Hindu terrorism is the only way to counter it. We need suicide bomb squads to protect India and Hindus,". "If they kill one Hindu, we'll kill hundreds of them," he once said. "Islamic terrorism is growing and Hindu terrorism is the only way to counter it. We need suicide bomb squads to protect India and Hindus," Thackeray wrote in 2008. [16]
[edit] Views on People from North India
On March 6, 2008, Bal Thackeray issued an editorial titled Ek Bihari, Sau Bimari[17] (One Bihari, Hundred maladies)[18] in Saamna, Shiv Sena's political mouthpiece, saying Biharis were "an unwanted lot" in the Maharashtra. In what was termed as an apparent bid to recapture his party's Marathi sons of soil plank, which was being hijacked by the MNS leader Raj Thackeray, Bal Thackeray wrote about Biharis,[19]
"They [Biharis] are not wanted in southern India, Assam and also Punjab and Chandigarh. The Biharis have antagonised local population wherever they had settled. The UP-Bihari MPs have shown their ingratitude towards Mumbai and Maharashtra with an anti-Marathi tirade in Parliament."[19]
He also denounced Bihari MPs, saying they were "spitting in the same plate from which they ate" by criticising Mumbaikars and Maharashtrians. He also wrote, "They are trying to add fuel to the fire that has been extinguished, by saying that Mumbaikars have rotten brains." Additionally, he criticized a major holiday celebrated by people from Bihar, UP, and MP which happens sometimes after the Hindu New Year (Diwali) known as Chath Pooja. He said that it wasn't a real holiday.[20] The outburst was apparently in response to MPs from Bihar who had disrupted the proceedings of the Lok Sabha in protest against the attacks on North Indians.[20]
Bihar chief minister, Nitish Kumar, upset with the remarks, demanded that the Prime Minister and the Centre intervene in the matter immediately. The Saamna editorial prompted at least 16 Lok Sabha MPs from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, belonging to the RJD, JD (U), SP and the Congress, to give notice for breach of privilege proceedings against Bal Thackeray.[20] After the matter was raised in the Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said: "If anybody has made any comment on our members' functioning in the conduct of business in the House, not only do we treat that with the contempt that it deserves, but also any action that may be necessary will be taken according to procedure and well established norms. Nobody will be spared,"[20]
On March 27, 2008 in protest against Balasaheb Thackeray's editorial, leaders of Shiv Sena in Delhi resigned citing its "outrageous conduct" towards non-Marathis in Maharashtra and announced that they will form a separate party.[21] Addressing a press conference Shiv Sena's North India chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal said the decision to leave the party was taken because of the "partial attitude" of the party high command towards Maharashtrians. "Shiv Sena is no different from Khalistan and Jammu and Kashmir militant groups which are trying to create a rift between people along regional lines. The main aim of these forces is to split our country. Like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, the Shiv Sena too has demeaned North Indians and treated them inhumanely," he said.[21][22]
[edit] Views against Abdul Kalam, President of India
Thackeray has been a vocal critic of the former President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam. Thackeray said Kalam was a leading scientist of the country but had "lost the dignity of the post" after he became President. He has criticized Kalam's indecisiveness regarding the conviction of Mohammad Afzal, who has been sentenced to death following his conviction for the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. Thackeray criticizes the fact that a convicted terrorist's appeal for clemency is even being considered by Kalam.[9]
"Afzal was sentenced to death by the highest court in this country in October and yet the file has been sitting on the President's table for the past four months. I have not said anything wrong about Kalam. We all have supported him to become President. Afzal's clemency letter is still lying with the President. Give me another example where the President has not taken decision on a clemency petition for four months."[9]
His views on Kalam have been heavily criticized by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi as inappropriate and "violative of decorum".[23]
[edit] Accusation of admiration of Hitler
Thackeray [24][25] has attracted controversy for his praise of Adolf Hitler.
Apparently he was quoted by Asiaweek as saying:
I am a great admirer of Hitler, and I am not ashamed to say so! I do not say that I agree with all the methods he employed, but he was a wonderful organizer and orator, and I feel that he and I have several things in common ... What India really needs is a dictator who will rule benevolently, but with an iron hand." [3]
In an interview with the Indian Express that was printed on January 29, 2007, Thackeray remarked,
Hitler did very cruel and ugly things. But he was an artist, I love him (for that). He had the power to carry the whole nation, the mob with him. You have to think what magic he had. He was a miracle ... The killing of Jews was wrong. But the good part about Hitler was that he was an artist. He was a daredevil. He had good qualities and bad. I may also have good qualities and bad ones. [4]
However, in the Star Talk talk show on channel Star Plus, he claimed himself not to admire Hitler.[26]
Thackeray's supporters, such as columnist Varsha Bhosle, have defended Thackeray's position as necessary in what they claim is an atmosphere of religious extremism against Hindus. In defense of a statement by Thackeray that "If the Muslims of India behave as the Jews in Germany did, they will deserve the same treatment," Bhosle writes:
Germany's Jews ...? What else is required for Hindus to shake off the stupor and consider protecting our civilisation and culture? In an article appearing in Newindpress.com on August 20, 2007, Thackeray is quoted as wanting to be a dictator and the Hitler of the whole of India:
He is on record as having told the Navakal: "Yes, I am a dictator. It is a Hitler that is needed in India today." He was once asked in a television programme whether he wanted to be the Hitler of Mumbai. "Do not underestimate me," he is reported to have retorted. "I am (the Hitler) of the whole of Maharashtra and want to be of whole of India." The Hitler question was put to him in September 1996 by Outlook magazine as well during an interview. "Once you'd expressed admiration for certain facets of Hitler." "Comparison was inevitable," the interviewer prompted. Thackaray said: "I have not sent anybody to the gas chamber. If I'd been like that, you wouldn't have dared to come and interview me."[28]

Thackeray has admitted that he is pro-Tamil Tiger. He says, "I am proud of the Tigers for the gallant manner in which they are fighting."[29]
He also wanted a ban on the LTTE lifted by the center-wing government.[30]
Writers Pi. Ci Kaṇēcan̲ and P.C. Ganesan write, "The LTTE may not be a communal outfit but it derives a lot of support from the Hindu Diaspora living in different countries. That is the reason why even the Shiv Sena Chief Balasaheb Thackeray came out openly in support of the LTTE."

An increase in intra-party rivalry between Balasaheb Thackeray's son Uddhav Thackeray, and nephew Raj Thackeray led to divisions within the Shiv Sena. In addition to this, several old hands such as hard-line leader Narayan Rane were expelled or left the Sena.
On December 18, 2005, Raj Thackeray announced his resignation as a primary member of the Shiv Sena. On March 19, 2006, Raj announced the formation of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
[edit] Valentine's Day protests
Boycotting shops and restaurants that allow young people to celebrate the "western" holiday of Valentine's Day, interpreted as bestial, indecent and a-Bharatiya (un-Indian) by Thackeray, is one of his recent actions. These boycotts have often culminated in violence and the destruction of said shops. On February 14, 2006, Balasaheb Thackeray condemned and apologized for the violent attacks of Shiv Sena members upon a private Valentine's Day celebration in Mumbai. "It is said that women were beaten up in the Nallasopara incident. If that really happened, then it is a symbol of cowardice," Thackeray said, "I have always instructed Shiv Sainiks that in any situation women should not be humiliated and harassed."[5] Thackeray and the Shiv Sena remain opposed to Valentine's Day celebrations, although they may support an "Indian alternative".[6]
